Emperor Yuri ruled Barrayar before Emperor Ezar.

Called Mad Emporor Yuri, he was a man who was paranoid that all the members of his close family and associates were trying to kill him. The steps he took to protect himself soon ensured that this became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This culminated in him sending out death-squads to kill all the members of his close family. Many of these attempts were unsuccessful, notably the assassination attempt on Aral Vorkosigan.

As a result, General Piotr Vorkosigan and his father Prince Xav united their forces in supporting Ezar and ensured that Ezar replaced Yuri on the throne.

Yuri was executed in the traditional manner, with each of his accusers taking a small nick out of his stomach with a knife. The eleven-year-old Aral Vorkosigan was the first to strike Yuri.
