Princess Kareen was the wife of Prince Serg and the mother of Emperor Gregor.

Until the conception of Gregor and Emperor Ezar's subsequent protection of her, she suffered the depravations of Prince Serg.

After the death of Prince Serg at Escobar, Kareen met Lady Coredelia Vorkosigan and took a liking to her. After their first meeting, Kareen assigned her personal bodyguard Droushnakovi to Lady Vorkosigan.

During the Pretendership, Kareen became the pawn of Count Vordarian. Vordarian needed to marry Kareen to make true his claim to the empire and forced Kareen into this role, although the wedding never took place. Kareen, believing her son Gregor to be dead, did not fight Vordarian, becoming apathetic to what was happening around her, in effect a prisoner in her own home.

When Lady Vorkosigan, while trying to rescue her son from Vordarian, was captured and met with Kareen, she managed to convince the Princess that her son lived.

Realising what had happened, Kareen snatched a nerve disruptor from a guard and attempted to shoot Vordarian. She missed and was killed by one of Vordarian's men.

The guardianship of her son was soon after handed to the Regent Aral Vorkosigan and his wife Cordelia.
