After Emperor Yuri sent his death squads out to kill his close family, General Piotr Vorkosigan and Prince Xav approached Ezar and together they overthrew Yuri and Ezar achieved the throne of Barrayar.

Before these events he had fought along side General Piotr during the Cetegandan invasion of Barrayar.

His reign lasted for many years and ended when he died in his sleep. His death was attributed not least to radioactive contamination he received during the fighting in the Cetegandan invasion.

Ezar was considered a master manipulator. During the last years of his life, Ezar had made it his mission to set the Empire to order.

After the birth of his grandson, Gregor, Ezar plotted to have his son Serg killed, not willing to have such a man and his evil associates in charge of Barrayar. This he achieved with the aid of Captain Negri, whom Ezar had appointed as head of ImpSec during his reign, and Lord Aral Vorkosigan.

While lying in his death bed, Ezar still managed to ferret out opponents and have these imprisoned or killed.

His final action in trying to safe-guard the empire was to appoint Aral Vorkosigan to be Regent after his death. He also detailed Negri to ensure that Aral did not try to claim the throne for himself.

Ezar's funeral offering was lit by his grandson Gergor.
