Admiral Kanzian was one of Barrayar's greatest strategists. Aral Vorkosigan, during the Vordarian Pretendership, remarked that Kanzian was one of only two people he knew that were better at tactics than himself.

Kanzian was missing, feared dead, during the early fighting in the Vordarian Pretendership. He was rescued from the capital, Vorbarr Sultana, by Commander Simon Illyan.

On his return, Kanzian worked to convince the space-based military forces to side with the regent and hence the legitimate government of Barrayar.
