Simon Illyan was the long time chief of Imperial Security, recently retired, noted for the Eidetic Memory Chip implanted in his brain that gave him instant and total recall of all his memories.

His duty to watch over then Commodore Aral Vorkosigan before and during the Escobar war continued through to the beginning of the Vordarian Pretendership (although then no longer as watcher but as aide/guard), when, after the death of Captain Negri, Admiral Regent Aral Vorkosigan appointed him as head of ImpSec.

Illyan was instrumental in rescuing Admiral Kanzian during the Pretendership. He subsequently re-built ImpSec into the organisation it is today, including the introduction of the "Special Course" for officers and ratings assigned to the protection of Emperor Gregor.

Imprisoned in ImpSec's own prison cells on suspicion of treason due to the actions of Lord Miles Vorkosigan, Illyan had the cells replaced with more comfortable ones and developed the philosophy that all ImpSec officers should at some time be locked-up so as to obtain an appreciation of that situation.

After the Hegen Alliance defeated an attempted invasion by Cetaganda, Illyan became Lieutenant Miles Vorkosigan's direct superior to facilitate Illyan's use of the Dendarii Mercenaries, entrusted to Illyan by Emperor Gregor.

Simon Illyan retired from ImpSec after General Haroche sabotaged Illyan's Eidetic Memory Chip, with the aim of replace Illyan as chief of ImpSec. General Haroche's treasonous actions were uncovered in short order by Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan (as 9th Auditor) on the order of Emperor Gregor.

During his convalescence Illyan and Alys Vorpatril became better acquainted and now carry on an intimate relationship.
